Le Gambrinus d'Alès
About This Spot
Stepping into Le Gambrinus d'Alès feels like slipping into a cherished corner of a traditional French brasserie, where time moves at its own gentle pace, inviting you to pause and soak up the everyday rhythms of Alès. The space is grounded in a rich, lived-in atmosphere—large fin de siècle windows pour in the afternoon sunlight, bathing the room in a warm glow that beckons both the early coffee seeker and those settling in for a relaxed meal.
The restaurant hums with a familiar buzz, a blend of local voices and clinking glasses that together create a convivial yet unpretentious backdrop. It’s the kind of place known to locals who return as naturally as one might visit an old friend, drawn by the ease of good, honest food and the steady, welcoming tempo of service that’s more about heart than hurry.
On the plate, Le Gambrinus d'Alès offers a comforting array of dishes that speak to the varied tastes of the region, ranging from hearty fare reminiscent of classic French brasseries to touches of Mediterranean freshness. Whether you’re indulging in fresh seafood or savoring one of their lighter salads, the experience is one of balanced simplicity — generous portions served with a straightforward warmth that feels like a home-cooked moment away from home.
The café side of the table is equally inviting, offering a quiet nook for an afternoon coffee or a leisurely café gourmand, perfect to accompany conversations or quiet reflection as sunlight filters through. In every detail, from the rustic charm of the interiors to the sincere, if occasionally unhurried, service, Le Gambrinus d'Alès holds the essence of a classic neighborhood staple: reliable, relaxed, and full of subtle character that invites you to return.

Always like to return to this nice and lively restaurant with my mother. Good food, fast service, very French ambiance

I usually come here for lunch. The dishes are delicious and the service is quite adorable. I also came here for coffee in the afternoon. The restaurant location is ideal for a sunny day.

Service is often a little slow and sullen, but this is an authentic old fashioned cafe and one of the best spots for an early afternoon coffee in Alès, saking up the sun through the large fin de siècle windows

It certainly won’t get any Michelin stars, but it’s quick and tasty food when you’re hungry.

Early lunch with friends as they use it all the time. I can see why. Food was delicious and service first class. Will keeping in mind for my next trip to Ales.

Price-quality is top, decent dishes and friendly waiters. We went here for lunch around lunchtime, with a group. We ordered Duck breast, steak and the chefs (fish) dish were all really good. Especially given the price. The salads look really good, too. Though I didn’t order those.
